Leeds United’s first night back in the Premier League brings Everton to Elland Road for a Monday showdown under the lights. The last time these two shared a top flight season, both were dragged into a relegation scrap. Everton survived; Leeds needed two more years to climb back. That history adds an edge, but the mood in LS11 feels more bullish this time
Despite being among the favourites for the drop, Leeds are marginally preferred by the bookies for the opener. The market also leans towards entertainment. With Leeds’ previous Premier League stint defined by end to end games and Everton potentially light at the back, over 2.5 goals at Evens looks a fair entry point. Both teams to score will attract interest too, given the balance of attacking threat and defensive absences
Leeds will try to harness the Elland Road surge, pressing high and turning loose balls into quick entries towards Piroe. Width and early crosses can trouble an Everton defence missing Branthwaite’s aerial dominance, while set pieces become a lever for the hosts. If Calvert Lewin is involved, his penalty box instincts and familiarity with Everton’s centre backs add a wrinkle Everton must plan for
David Moyes’s side, if reshaped by absences, may lean on compact spacing, channel balls for runners, and Grealish’s ability to draw fouls and tilt territory should he get minutes. Mykolenko’s status affects how aggressively the visitors can push the left flank; if he is out, Everton’s rest defence and cover on transitions will need tightening against Leeds’ breaks
