Arsenal started their Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Gunners were unconvincing in the final third against the Red Devils, but managed to come on top with a hard-fought win.
Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on a blunder from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir to open the scoring in the 13th minute of the encounter.
Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances thereafter. Bukayo Saka’s late attempt on goal was superbly blocked by Matthijs de Ligt.
The defence was primarily the reason behind the victory after some last-ditch tackles and interceptions.
Goalkeeper David Raya was fantastic in goal with seven saves and was adjudged the man of the match.
However, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes were also brilliant in the heart of the defence, and the former stood out in our view.
The Frenchman won eight duels alongside seven clearances and four tackles. He completed 22 out of 26 passes and had 47 touches.
Saliba also impressed with his positioning against Matheus Cunha.
The latter made a sensational solo run but Saliba tracked him, contributing to his tame scoring effort.
The 24-year-old had a mixed ending to the previous campaign, and he was indecisive at times, making errors that contributed to goals.
Saliba also picked up an injury in the final month, but he has returned this season with a renewed vigour and determination to succeed.
Saliba and Gabriel had a shaky start at Old Trafford, but they looked back at their best in the closing stages to secure a clean sheet.
Arsenal did not play well but picked up three points which is a potential sign of champions.
They will be eyeing a second-straight victory in the new campaign when Leeds United visit the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
