Man City eye 'sensational' Real swoop, but Liverpool could throw spanner in the works

Manchester City could supposedly try to prise Rodrygo away from Real Madrid if they lose Tottenham Hotspur-linked Savinho this summer.

The Sky Blues got up and running for the Premier League season with a 4-0 battering of Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday evening, where new signing Tijjani Reijnders stole the show with a goal and assist.

Fellow summer arrival Rayan Cherki also got in on the act, rounding off the scoring in the second half, while Erling Haaland began his Golden Boot quest with a brace at Molineux.

However, Brazilian Savinho was not involved owing to a pre-season injury, which will render him unavailable for a few weeks, and the former Troyes and Girona attacker is also rumoured to be a genuine target for Tottenham.

The Lilywhites are edging closer to the capture of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace, but they are also seeking a long-term successor to Son Heung-min on the left, and Savinho seemingly fits the bill in terms of what Thomas Frank is after.

City prepare 'sensational' Rodrygo swoop if Savinho leaves

Spurs have reportedly already failed with one £60m offer for Savinho, but they are prepared to go back in with a revised bid for the South American, whom Man City are planning to replace with one of his compatriots.

According to the Daily Mail, the Sky Blues are now contemplating a 'sensational swoop' for Real's Rodrygo, whose future has been a hot-button topic ever since the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

The report adds that Spurs-linked Savinho is 'intent' on moving on during the current transfer window, and Rodrygo has been 'earmarked' as the ideal candidate to fill his fellow winger's boots.

The 24-year-old has been overshadowed by Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior over the past year at the Bernabeu, and a mediocre La Liga campaign saw him register just six goals and six assists in 30 top-flight appearances in 2024-25.

Rodrygo was also nothing more than a bit-part player for Xabi Alonso during the Club World Cup, playing just 93 minutes across three appearances and being left on the bench for their 4-0 semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Do City need to worry about Arsenal, Liverpool in Rodrygo transfer race?

Rodrygo's Real contract runs until the end of the 2027-28 season, but the consensus is that Los Blancos will not stand in his way of leaving if they receive a suitable bid within the next couple of weeks.

City's Premier League title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool have also been credited with a serious interest in the former Santos starlet, but the Gunners would almost certainly need to sell before they could buy, and a big-money exit does not appear imminent.

One of Fabio Vieira, Gabriel Martinelli or Leandro Trossard would surely have to depart first, and there are no signs that a deal is on the cusp of completion for any of the trio, so Arsenal cannot fathom forking out both a sizeable fee and sizeable wages amid their current squad size.

However, Rodrygo is rumoured to have made Liverpool his preferred transfer destination if he is to leave Real Madrid this summer, and it will be interesting to see how the Reds proceed if there is no breakthrough on the Alexander Isak front.
