Mikel Merino has a new nickname for Riccardo Calafiori after his Arsenal goal to beat Man United

Unfortunately for Mikel Merino, he could only play a small part as a substitute in Arsenal’s opening weekend 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Towards the tail end of last season, Mikel Merino was front and centre of the action for Arsenal whilst playing as a makeshift number nine.

However, following the arrival of Viktor Gyokeres at Arsenal and Kai Havertz’s return to fitness, there’s no need for the Spaniard to operate as a striker for now.

That being said, Riccardo Calafiori had to step in to score for Arsenal against United in what was ultimately a pretty abject performance.

And whilst Nicklas Bendtner was disappointed with Arsenal’s display, Calafiori was able to earn three vital points for the Gunners on the road.

Before things kicked off against United, Myles Lewis-Skelly was expected to start at left-back for Arsenal.

However, along with leaving Jurrien Timber on the bench, Mikel Arteta decided to start Calafiori at left-back, which was a bold call.

And whilst Ben White might lose his spot to Timber against Leeds United, Calafiori made a strong case to continue to start at left-back, even if Lewis-Skelly is an exceptional talent.

With and without the ball, the Italian was imperious – he was gliding into midfield and it’s clear that Arsenal would have been a lot better off last season had he stayed fit.

Following full-time, Calafiori took to Instagram to celebrate his goal and Arsenal’s win.

And along with a selection of photos he wrote: “First game of the season and 3 points. Lots to do, we keep going.”

In reply Merino simply wrote: “Goleatoreee.”

Roughly translated to English that means someone who is a prolific scorer, a player who scores a lot of goals.

And coming from an auxiliary striker like Merino, that’s quite the compliment.

Riccardo Calafiori needs better luck with injuries this season

Whilst Arsenal were desperately searching for a striker last season, some supporters in N5 did actually jovially suggest that Calafiori should be tried as a makeshift number nine.

Calafiori has spoken about playing in midfield for Arsenal in the past, and it’s clear that he does have the ability to thrive in more advanced positions.

And as the season goes on, Calafiori’s fitness might be a crucial factor to Arsenal’s success.

In his debut season in north London, Calafiori missed far too many games – he was unlucky with injuries and he never really got to show his ability consistently.

Former Italy teammate Leonardo Bonucci has talked up Calafiori this year and it’s clear that the 23-year-old can have a big impact if he’s available week in, week out.

And in respect of Lewis-Skelly also sharing chances with the Italian, it should benefit both players to dip in and out of the side, regularly enjoying a rest.
