Pittsburgh Steelers host several long snapper for tryouts after fan favorite suffers injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted four long snappers for workouts on Sunday after starting long snapper Christian Kuntz suffered a chest injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said the Steelers received ‘good news’ on Kuntz’s injury, but with a short week, he is unlikely to play against the Carolina Panthers.

So, the Steelers brought in multiple veteran long snappers for tryouts. Long snappers Taybor Pepper, Patrick Scales, Rick Lovato, and Jake McQuaide all were in Pittsburgh for a workout.

Pepper is the player the Steelers have the most experience with after they brought him to rookie minicamp as a veteran tryout, but they never signed him. He played with the 49ers from 2020 to 2024 and has been in the NFL since 2017.

Lovato won the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles last season and has spent over a decade in the NFL, and earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2019. He was with the Eagles from 2016 to 2024.

McQuaide, 38, has been in the NFL since 2011, playing with the Los Angeles Rams from 2011 to 2020. Last season, he spent time on multiple teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, and Miami Dolphins. He has played in 197 games.

Scales was with the Bears from 2015 to 2024 as their long snapper. He has played in 122 games over his lengthy NFL career.

The Steelers released backup long snapper Tucker Addington on August 7 and he remains a free agent. Defensive lineman Logan Lee served as the backup long snapper in-game.
