Sunderland have submitted an official bid to Bologna for Colombian centre-back Jhon Lucumi, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
It's been an exciting summer transfer window so far for Sunderland supporters, with the North East club bringing in a host of new additions. The most notable is undoubtedly former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, who was recently appointed as their new captain for the 2025/2026 campaign.
The likes of Simon Adingra, Habib Diarra, and Nordi Mukiele have also arrived through the door, with Sunderland looking to make a real impact in the transfer market as they aim to survive in the Premier League. The Black Cats received a significant chunk of money earlier in the summer transfer window, with Jobe Bellingham joining Borussia Dortmund.

Reporting on X, Romano has confirmed that Sunderland have now submitted an official offer to sign Bologna defender Lucumi, with the centre-back keen on a move to the newly promoted Premier League side. Bologna are hoping to keep Lucumi, with a clear intention of not letting him depart after his release clause expired.

Lucumi, who has been labelled a "phenomenon", would help to bolster Sunderland's defensive options, but it certainly didn't look like they needed it against West Ham United at the weekend. The Black Cats got off to a phenomenal start upon their return to the Premier League, securing a 3-0 victory in front of their home supporters.
Lucumi is a towering, powerful defender, and he could be a useful option for Sunderland due to being left-footed. The South American can help provide balance in the defence, especially when building out from the back, and his physical traits should translate well to the Premier League.
Sunderland have some favourable fixtures ahead, if there is such a thing in England's top flight, as they face Burnley away from home next. Regis Le Bris' side then host Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup, before returning to Premier League action against Brentford at home next Saturday.
