NBA star, Upstate native’s high school jersey to be retired

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A Greenville native and NBA star is back home to receive a special honor.

Nic Claxton, a former students and basketball player at Legacy Early College, will have his jersey retired on Monday inside the Parker Gymnasium.

Claxton graduated from the school in 2017 before playing at the University of Georgia. He was later drafted by the Brooklyn Nets in 2019.

On Sunday, a private preview event was held to celebrate Claxton’s journey to the NBA. This is where he was told that his jersey would seen be retired.

“Honestly I was taken aback,” Claxton said. “I didn’t know what was going on. I was confused but when they said that that’s what was being presented today. I’m just— ecstatic!”

The city also surprised Claxton by declaring Aug. 17 as “Nic Claxton Day”, presenting him with a plaque to mark the moment.
