AFC general manager believes Philadelphia isn’t done making trades

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

The Philadelphia Eagles have made two trades (acquiring Jakorian Bennett and John Metchie) in recent weeks but they still have 13 picks in the 2026 NFL Draft to work with.

John Metchie trade: Eagles acquire Texans wide receiver - BGN

The Eagles acquiring a receiver is interesting since they seemingly weren’t in need of more depth at that position. A.J. Brown (who’s dealing with a hamstring injury that the team hasn’t seem majorly concerned about), DeVonta Smith (Metchie’s former teammate at Alabama), and Jahan Dotson are established as the top three for 2025. Johnny Wilson has overcome a slow start to training camp. Undrafted rookie Darius Cooper has had a good camp and really shined in the first preseason game. Ainias Smith hasn’t lit the world on fire in camp but he has two touchdown catches through two preseason games. Unless the Eagles keep seven wide receivers, which is possible but seems unlikely, Metchie’s arrival could be bad news for Cooper or Smith. The feeling here is the Eagles would unwise to expose Cooper to waivers. Smith seems more expendable, though he might have value as a primary punt returner.

Emergency pod: Eagles Acquire John Metchie from Texans | What the Trade Means for Philly - PHLY Eagles Podcast

Breaking news: The Philadelphia Eagles have traded for Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III, reuniting him with his former Alabama teammate DeVonta Smith. Metchie, a 2022 2nd-round pick, comes to Philly at minimal cost with tight end Harrison Bryant heading to Houston in the deal. In this video, Bo Wulf and Brandon Lee Gowton react to the move.

Eagles stock up, stock down after preseason game vs. Browns - NBCSP

Backup OL: The Eagles’ offense had just 38 yards in the first half behind the second-team OL of Kendall Lamm, Brett Toth, Drew Kendall, Darian Kinnard and Matt Pryor. This group struggled to get much going. The Eagles averaged just 2.4 yards per rush in the first half. And then Myles Hinton gave up a pressure to Julian Okwara on the pick-6 in the third quarter after Toth’s snap was high. The Eagles had just 88 offensive yards and the line was a big reason why.

2025 NFL training camp: Lessons, updates from 10 team visits - ESPN

On the day I was at camp, the Eagles had rookie linebacker Jihaad Campbell playing two positions. With the first team, he was the weakside linebacker -- Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was calling in the plays as the Mike while Zack Baun was resting because of a back injury. With Campbell at weakside backer, he would occasionally walk down to the line of scrimmage in blitz looks, and he got a couple of nice reps in as an edge rusher. With the second team, he remained on the field and became the middle linebacker. He called in the plays besides second-team Will and fellow rookie Smael Mondon Jr., who looked solid. It is always significant when a coaching staff believes it can train a rookie at multiple positions. It is doubly significant at linebacker in a Vic Fangio defense because a lot can change between the Will and Mike roles -- different coverage reads, different landmarks and different responsibilities making audibles.

Eagles Trade for a WR - Iggles Blitz

I don’t think this trade affects Wilson or Cooper. They’ve played well enough to earn roster spots. It does hurt Ainias Smith. He’s done some good things, but hasn’t played so well that he locked up a spot. Metchie is under contract for 2024 and will be an RFA next season because he wasn’t able to play as a rookie. That makes Metchies valuable to the Eagles from a financial perspective. Dotson will be a UFA next year. Metchie could step in as the #3 receiver at a reasonable price. The Eagles passing game has had issues when AJ Brown and/or DeVonta Smith gets hurt. Adding a player like Metchie should help that situation moving forward. He can play in the slot or outside. He and Dotson can team with Brown or Smith to still give the team a good trio. Really smart move by Howie. He gives up very little, but adds a player with both experience and potential. The Eagles are now a deeper, more talented team.

2021 NFL Redraft: Rebuilding the first round based on PFF grades and data - PFF

11. New York Giants: WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama (Round 1, Pick 10). Original Pick: QB Justin Fields, Ohio State. Smith is the most steady wide out between him, Nico Collins and Jaylen Waddle. He has played more than 1,000 snaps in each of his first four seasons and has yet to earn a single-season PFF receiving grade below 77.0.

Spadaro: 4 observations of the Eagles’ QB position after Browns game - PE.com

Tanner McKee is an example of how to develop a young quarterback. A sixth-round draft pick in 2022, McKee has had three offensive coordinators and three quarterbacks coaches in his three seasons – as has Hurts, of course – and McKee has continued to make great progress. His lights-out performance in the preseason opener – 20-of-25 passes, 3 total touchdowns (including a Tush Push!) – after playing so well in games against Dallas and the Giants in last year’s regular season continued to validate the Eagles’ great feelings for him. Then McKee played well in two days of joint practices against the Browns and he earned the rest on Saturday, one that is truly unusual. How many No. 2 quarterbacks get the second preseason game off? This speaks to the value of McKee and in how confident the team is in his ability to play and play well in the offense.

Philly native James LeGette, one of the NFL’s few male cheerleaders, serves as an inspiration - Inquirer

In 2025, the Eagles cheer team will include three male cheerleaders, their largest contingent ever, with LeGette and rookies Alex Fan and Dalton Walsh on the squad.

Washington Commanders 91-man preseason depth chart ahead of Bengals MNF game - Hogs Haven

Veteran WR Terry McLaurin who was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list with a non-contract ankle injury when he first reported to camp was removed from the PUP list this weekend.

3 takeaways from Cowboys’ 31-13 loss vs. Ravens - Blogging The Boys

Joe Milton’s concerning night: It’s time to start raising the alarm on Joe Milton. He had a rough outing early in the contest last week, but found some momentum late in the game. It was a near-identical script tonight, but without much of the late-game improvement. Milton played the entire first half, and the offense looked flat in the passing game. He threw eight passes in the first half and completed two of them for a paltry 14 yards. Milton still holds the ball too long and doesn’t sense pressure. The Cowboys allowed a safety for the first points of the game, and while the protection could have been better to not allow a free rusher in the backfield, Milton could have also had the urgency to get rid of the ball faster.

Rookie report: Which Giants rookies stood out against the Jets? - Big Blue View

Jaxson Dart currently ranks fifth in the NFL in Success Rate, fourth in completion percentage, fourth in yards per attempt, and third in EPA/play. Overall, he’s 26 of 35 for 291 yards and 2 touchdowns, with another 29 yards and a touchdown rushing. Not bad for a little under a game of work. He’s handling what he’s asked to do well, easily moving through his reads as well as showing great command of the ball. Dart has a strong arm, but he isn’t just a fastball thrower. He knows when to take velocity off and throw with timing, touch, and trajectory. Him coming in for one play — simulating a sudden injury or equipment malfunction — and making it work was particularly impressive. Dart likely has a ways to go before he’s deemed “ready” but the early returns are definitely encouraging. (No, there still isn’t a quarterback controversy, no matter how much some people want to will one into existence.)

Taylor Swift knows more about football than the people who want her off their NFL screens - SB Nation

Taylor Swift’s guest appearance on New Heights was a moment, like it or not. Over 1.2M people tuned in live to watch a football podcast because of her appearance on the Kelce brothers’ show, and honestly, if you left watching that disliking her then you’re a just a hater — because she was effortlessly charming, funny, and genuinely likable. Normally the announcement of a Taylor Swift album happens at an awards show or a national morning broadcast, or it’s designed to garner tens-of-millions of impressions on social media. It doesn’t happen on a podcast where two brothers talk about football and shoot the shit — which is just the tip of the iceberg on why the appearance was so great. Aside from learning about The Life of a Showgirl, her upcoming album, and getting to see Taylor and Travis interact as a couple (which was genuinely sweet), we also got to learn about how Taylor has been learning football.

Bengals listening to trade offers for pass rusher Trey Hendrickson with contract talks at impasse - NFL.com

Trey Hendrickson’s contract saga with the Bengals just took its latest turn. Cincinnati is listening to trade offers for the four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher now that contract talks are at an impasse, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Sunday, per sources. Rapoport added that any deal to wrest Hendrickson away from Cincy will be expensive, likely requiring a young player and a future draft pick. Such a price might make sense for a playoff-ready team looking to punch up its pass rush.
