Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak is refusing to go away.

The Magpies striker was absent from their squad in his team’s first match of the season, an away trip to Villa Park.

While Liverpool started their season with a 4-2 win against Bournemouth at Anfield, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle failed to score against Aston Villa in their season opener.

Isak’s future is still uncertain and since making their first bid for the Sweden international attacker, the Reds have been quiet and have adopted a more cautious approach.

That does not mean that they have ended their pursuit of the 25-year-old striker but before making any significant offer, they want to see if the Magpies are willing to do business.

Howe has been vocal about the transfer saga, claiming that he wants to see a resolution soon in this matter so that all the parties can move on.

Expert claims Liverpool are set to sign Alexander Isak

Stefan Borson, an expert on financial matters, has claimed that Liverpool could sign the attacker after their match against Newcastle United next week.

In conversation with the Football Insider, he said:

“I guess we’ve got to a point now where I think probably most likely, if you were betting on it, you’d say Liverpool put forward a deal that’s sort of £125million plus a load of add-ons, some easy and some not easy, and it gets done after the Newcastle v Liverpool game and he joins Liverpool.

“But it just depends on the hardball that Newcastle want to play as an organisation as much as anything.

“I do think Liverpool are in a good position in respect of the player because he’s made it very difficult for Newcastle.

“I think if we’d have looked at it at the start of the summer, you’d have said Liverpool will have to pay close to £150million.

“If he does end up going now, I think they have successfully chipped off £10-15million of his fee.”

Liverpool fans would love this update from Borson but only time will tell if that is going to be the case.

Isak has made it clear, repeatedly, that he has no desire of playing for the Magpies again and he does not want to integrate into the squad.

He has made his final decision to leave the club and that gives Liverpool the advantage in negotiations to sign him.

The Merseyside club’s current striker Hugo Ekitike started his season in fine manner, scoring and providing an assist on his league debut. Perhaps he would be the only one disappointed if Liverpool end up signing Isak this summer.
