Everybody could win as 'cult hero' Onana wanted for second stint at old club

Manchester United number one could supposedly be offered an escape route from Old Trafford by one of his former clubs this summer.

The Cameroon international was a particularly notable absentee from the matchday squad for Sunday's 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal, where Altay Bayindir stepped in between the posts with Tom Heaton in reserve.

The Red Devils' number two failed to cover himself in glory for Arsenal's winner, though, flapping at a Declan Rice corner before Riccardo Calafiori nodded in the game's only goal.

Onana had previously been nursing a pre-season injury, which was initially thought to have put him at risk of missing the start of the new Premier League campaign, but it then emerged that the problem was not as serious as first feared.

Man United boss Ruben Amorim confirmed that his Onana omission was a tactical choice, and the former Ajax and Inter Milan shot-stopper will almost certainly be searching for a new club if the Red Devils bring in another shot-stopper.

Onana has been heavily linked with the Saudi Pro League this summer, but according to The Sun, he could instead have the chance to continue his career at the highest level in Europe.

The report claims that Inter Milan are making checks on their former goalkeeper, who represented the Italian giants for one season in 2022-23 and played a fundamental role in their progression to that season's Champions League final, where they lost to Manchester City.

Onana also won a Serie A and Supercoppa Italiana title at San Siro - keeping a total of 19 clean sheets in 41 appearances in all tournaments - and he supposedly remains a 'cult hero' at the club in spite of his short-lived stay.

As a result, Inter chiefs are allegedly of the view that the 29-year-old would be 'open-minded' to a second stint in Serie A as the Nerazzurri plan for the future without Yann Sommer, who turns 37 in December and is now in the final year of his contract with the Milan giants.

In contrast, Onana still has three years left to run on his deal with Man United, whom he has kept 24 clean sheets in 101 appearances for, while also shipping 148 goals and coming under fire for several high-profile errors.

The former Ajax goalkeeper is not the only option that Inter are considering for a Sommer successor, as the report adds that the 2024-25 Champions League runners-up are also discussing a deal for Royal Antwerp's highly-rated 23-year-old Senne Lammens.

However, Man United have also made Lammens one of their top goalkeeping targets, but the Red Devils signing the Belgian would open the door for Onana to return to Inter - a situation where everybody wins, in both club and player terms.

Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez and Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma have also been mentioned as new number ones for Amorim, but Manchester City are thought to be winning the race for the latter, and there has been no serious movement on the Martinez front.

The Red Devils are next in action away to Fulham on Sunday afternoon, before opening their EFL Cup campaign away to Grimsby Town in the second round on August 27.
