Safety Andrew Wingard has always been a fan favorite. From his electric demeanor to his patented "It was always the Jags," he's been the heart and soul of the Jacskonville Jaguars defense for years.
Now, with younger defensive backs flooding the roster, Dewey is letting his playing speak for him. And against the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 of the preseason, he solidified his case to start next to Eric Murray come Week 1.

Andrew Wingard helps the Jaguars make the Saints march backwards
In week 2 of the preseason, the Jaguars ended their match with the Saints with a 17–17 tie. I'll let others talk about how the first stringers did, but we can at least take a moment to check in on our boy Dewey.
After a fumble by Lawrence — that was really one of those "stuff happens" fumbles — Wingard delivered one of the game’s most eye-catching defensive plays: he bulldozed Saints lineman Cesar Ruiz and running back Kendre Miller, bringing down quarterback Tyler Shough for a crushing eight-yard sack that ignited the defense.
That highlight stands out, but it wasn’t a flash-in-the-pan performance. While Wingard didn't stay on the field long, he still managed two additional solo tackles—one for a loss.

Dewey steals the show during the scrimmage
I know—training camp doesn't count. But Andrew Wingard's performance in the preseason isn't an isolated event. Last Thursday, the Jaguars held a scrimmage with the starting offense playing the starting defense. Jaguars Senior Reporter/Editor, J.P. Shadrick, reported that during the two-plus hours of play, "The defense seemed to have the upper hand a lot of the day, and safety Andrew Wingard seemed to have a good day with an interception and at least two tackles for loss in the run game.

Why Andrew Wingard's play matters for the Jaguars cecondary
Andrew Wingard isn’t just another preseason performer—he’s a seven-year veteran with a proven track record in Duval. His experience, leadership, and consistency provide balance to a secondary gaining youth and potential.
His Week 2 showing reinforces what camp murmurs hinted at: Wingard isn’t waiting for an opening—he’s earning on-field opportunities. In a secondary that needs sure tacklers and sound decision-makers, he offers exactly that.

Final Word
Andrew Wingard’s preseason work isn’t flashy, but it’s meaningful. His sack against the Saints might have been the pin that pushed Jacksonville’s secondary depth chart into clarity.
