Player training with relegated club after Manchester United exit–Disappointment with situation

Victor Lindelöf made 25 appearances for Manchester United last season, getting around 1200 minutes on the pitch. Throughout the campaign it was increasingly clear the defender would be allowed to leave Old Trafford when his contract expired at the end of June.

There was no renewal attempt from Ruben Amorim’s side, and Lindelöf has been free to negotiate with others since January. That’s a lot of time to find a new club, but he hasn’t managed to do so yet.

Of course, without a club it makes it impossible for Lindelöf, who was national team captain not so long ago, to have any meaningful Sweden future. Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson has been asked about the defender’s situation following his Manchester United exit.

Fotbollskanalen quote him as saying: “In a perfect world he would be available, would have played the whole pre-season and all the matches. But that’s not the case. These are things we have to deal with and that’s why I’m very happy to look back at the June matches. We had some new faces but Sweden looked like Sweden.”

Lindelöf has been training with his hometown club Västerås SK, who were relegated from Sweden’s top flight last season. He played for them before moving to Benfica and whilst a playing return at the very end of his career may be on the cards, the 31-year-old will surely be looking for something higher up the football pyramid right now.
