Sheffield United make offer for free agent with 250+ Premier League appearances

Sheffield United have made a move to sign free agent Ben Mee this summer with a trial on the agenda for the experienced defender, according to the Star.

Sheffield United have endured a turbulent spell in recent years, shifting between the Championship and the Premier League. Their bid for an immediate return to the top flight in 2024/25 fell short, however, as they were beaten by Sunderland in the play-off final.

Now, the Blades are entering a new chapter under Ruben Selles, who has replaced Chris Wilder as the club’s owners aim to stamp their authority on life at Bramall Lane. But the fresh start has been anything but smooth, with difficulties emerging both on and off the pitch.

Frustration is growing among fans as the summer transfer window passes with limited business and a string of failed deals. However, Sheffield United are continuing to push for incomings, and defensive reinforcements are the aim.

The latest man on the Blades’ radar is experienced centre-back Ben Mee, who is a free agent as of this summer. According to the Star, SUFC have offered Mee the chance to train with them with a view to being offered a contract with the club for this season.

Mee has also been linked with Sheffield Wednesday recently, but it is believed there is nothing to that talk. If he is to move ot Sheffield, it would be with the red side of the city.

Mee was with Premier League Brentford last season. He made 11 appearances for the club, with seven in the Premier League.

A potentially very shrewd signing for Sheffield United

Mee may not be the most exciting name for Sheffield United, but he could have plenty to offer. His plethora of top-flight experience alone could make him very valuable.

The Blades need bodies at the back, and as a free agent, Mee is very low risk. He has spent most of his career relatively injury-free, which is always handy at any level.

Sheffield United are after at least another two defensive signings in the final few days of the window. Should Mee be one of them, they could have extra funds free to bring in a big name as the other, with Charlie Hughes of Hull City and Coventry City’s Bobby Thomas continuing to be linked.

Could be very important to the Sheffield United project

Sheffield United are one of many sides to adopt a youth-focused project moving forward. This summer, they have seen five players come in, with Dijbril Soumare as the oldest at 22.

With a project like that, you need to bring in some experienced heads too, and Mee could be that. The most successful sides running this way have thrived with older players involved, namely Brighton and Brentford.

There are already some players of that ilk at the club. However, Mee ticks a lot of boxes for Sheffield United at this moment in time.
