Napoli could do business with Manchester United after an unfortunate injury to Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgium international has sustained a muscle injury, and he could be sidelined for three months or more.
Hence, Napoli have re-entered the transfer market for a striker to compete with new arrival Lorenzo Lucca.
Italian outlet Calciomercato now claim that Joshua Zirkzee is Antonio Conte’s first-choice to replace Lukaku.
Zirkzee has fallen out of favour under manager Ruben Amorim and it is reported that he could be allowed to leave for a suitable fee.
A permanent transfer or a loan with an option or obligation to buy could be considered.
Conte sees Zirkzee as a link-up centre-forward who is technically strong and capable of scoring double figures.
The departure of Zirkzee could close the door on Rasmus Hojlund’s exit. AC Milan have been in talks for the Dane.
United could entertain Zirkzee’s exit for the right price
The Dutchman joined the Red Devils for £36 million in the summer of 2024 after a productive season with Bologna.
He managed 19 goal contributions from 37 appearances for the Serie A outfit and also helped them win the Coppa Italia.
Zirkzee has since managed only 12 goal involvements from 49 outings at United. Only five of those have come in the Premier League.
He has obviously struggled to cope with the higher intensity of the division. Amorim himself does not see him as a striker.
Zirkzee operated as a number 10 towards the end of last season. His playing time could be limited in the current season.
Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are assured starters in attacking midfield and could complete 90 minutes most times.
Hence, United could open the door for Zirkzee’s exit if they can recoup the £36.5m spent on his services.
Zirkzee could excel on his return to Serie A, which is more tactical and less intense. He could revive his form from his Bologna days.
