Albion prospect helps 'win the battle' after being thrown straight in for debut

Malick Yalcouye helped his new team “win the midfield battle” on his Championship debut.

The on-loan [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/) man was pitched straight into the starting XI by Swansea City.

He helped them to their first points of the season as they beat Sheffield United 1-0.

Yalcouye has signed on loan in West Glamorgan for the season following his impressive loan at Sturm Graz last term.

It is believed there was plenty of interest in his services, helped by a couple of lively performances for Albion in Marbella.

Swansea boss Alan Sheehan wasted little time getting him involved and said: “I think he did well.

“He has been with the team a couple of days. He's got great energy. He's got to get integrated into the Championship.

"He showed some real quality at times and calmness within our structure and he worked really hard for the team, so it's great to have that competition for the team, and I don't think you can pick out any individual today that didn't come out of it positively."

Yalcouye, who turns 20 in November, got a feel for how Swansea play when he watched them beat [Crawley Town](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/crawleynews/) in the Carabao Cup last Tuesday.

He played the first 62 minutes of the Sheffield United match, alongside Portuguese midfielder Goncalo Franco.

Swansea were good value for their win and Yalcouye will face more competition for a place when New Zealand midfielder Marko Stamenic completes a permanent move from Nottingham Forest.

Sheehan (pictured) said: “The midfield performance was excellent. I was very happy as we won the middle of the pitch. We won the midfield battle.”

Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler has made it clear Yalcouye was first brought in from IFK Gothenburg largely on the basis of chairman Tony Bloom’s player recruitment data.

Swansea now have a clear week in which to prepare for another home game, against Watford.
