Patriots provide major injury updates ahead of Giants preseason game

FOXBORO — The Patriots are placing defensive tackle Isaiah Iton on injured reserve, executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf announced Monday morning.

Iton, a training camp standout and depth chart riser, injured his hip in Saturday’s preseason win over the Vikings. The Patriots signed wide receiver Phil Lutz to fill his spot on the 90-man roster.

Lutz played collegiately at Delaware and Tufts and participated in Patriots rookie minicamp.

Additionally, head coach Mike Vrabel announced Monday that cornerback Christian Gonzalez and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne will not practice this week or play in Thursday’s preseason game against the Giants. Wide receivers Efton Chism and Kyle Williams won’t practice Monday, but they’ll continue to be evaluated before Tuesday’s practice and Thursday’s preseason game.

Gonzalez (hamstring) hasn’t practiced since the first week of training camp. Bourne suffered an injury in an intra-squad scrimmage in the second week of training camp.

Chism and Williams both got banged up in Saturday’s preseason win. Chism didn’t get back into the game after an impressive touchdown score in which he broke numerous tackles.

The Patriots were light on wide receivers Monday with just Lutz, Javon Baker, Kayshon Boutte, Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, John Jiles and Jeremiah Webb healthy. Ja’Lynn Polk also continues to miss time after getting injured in the Patriots’ preseason opener.
