The player Everton now want to sign once said he's the best midfielder in the Premier League

Everton are still active in the summer transfer market and are exploring a deal to sign a midfielder before the window slams shut.

The Toffees have brought in some top-quality players so far, but there is still plenty to do after several key departures.

The Scotsman is also eyeing a midfielder, and the one Everton are after once made a really bold claim back in 2021.

Everton target Yves Bissouma said he’s the best midfielder in the Premier League

Everton retain an interest in Yves Bissouma, having been linked with a move earlier in the summer window.

It’s understood Moyes and his chiefs are monitoring his situation at Tottenham Hotspur and could rival West Ham United to land his signature.

The 28-year-old was once considered one of the very best number eights in the Premier League and he had that self-belief, speaking back in 2021.

Asked who the best midfielder in the league is, Bissouma said: “I don’t want to be arrogant, but it’s me because in my head I am working to be the best.

“So I cannot say another name, I know in the Premier League there are so many good midfielders, but for me, it’s me because that gives me the confidence and the energy to work hard to show people I am here and I am Bissouma.”

Bissouma’s impressive underlying data

Whilst Bissouma perhaps hasn’t reached the same heights he showed at Brighton and Hove Albion, he’s still a top player that’d be a real welcome addition to Everton’s midfield.

His underlying data is really impressive, as he ranks in the top nine per cent for tackles per 90 compared to his positional peers across Europe, as per FBref.

The 41-cap Mali international also ranks in the top eight per cent for clearances and 17 per cent for interceptions, so the defensive side of his game is really strong.

Bissouma is partial to a wondergoal here and there, too, having netted 15 goals across his career at Lille, Brighton and Tottenham.

Bissouma wasn’t included in Spurs’ matchday squad against Burnley on the weekend.
