Vic Fangio's update on Eagles' CB2 job at camp will only raise more questions

One question every Philadelphia Eagles fan has starting their work week: Who is going to be the CB2 on the team?

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio provided an update on how the position battle is going. Fangio responded to a question regarding whether he was disappointed that no one has run away with the job yet.

"Well, not really. I mean, they're close. Usually, it does become pretty obvious to everybody as to who's gonna win the job. That hadn't happened yet. I think they all have done a good job in their own way, had good moments, not so good moments. So we haven't reached that conclusion yet."

Another question was asked about why Cooper DeJean hasn't been seen in the outside corner position. Fangio's response was simple and straight to the point.

"Watch today's practice."

Fangio added that DeJean will be in the mix at outside cornerback, but wants him to remain in the slot when they are lining up in Nickel packages. The former Broncos head coach also added that he wants to get Jakorian Bennett a full opportunity to win the job.

Who's got the edge at CB2 for the Eagles?

Let's look at all the candidates for the job. Adoree' Jackson, Kelee Ringo, Bennett, and now DeJean are all in the conversation for CB2.

Jackson has proven to be a solid tackler in the open field. The problem is that he hasn't made any significant coverage plays in the preseason so far. One other issue Jackson has: Fangio has not been very complimentary to the cornerback, as Jackson was a Howie Roseman signing, not necessarily approved by Fangio.

Ringo might be the biggest disappointment of all the candidates. Secretly, the Eagles and Fangio want it to work with Ringo at CB2, but he got burned by Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase in Week 1 of the preseason, and he didn't do much against the Browns.

Bennett is starting to grow on the Eagles fan base as he had a beautiful pass breakup against the Browns. It may seem like one play shouldn't seal the job for Bennett, but it's better than what most of the corners have done.

DeJean is a fantastic player and his colleagues in the NFL think he is one of the top 100 players in the NFL. The issue is that DeJean is strongest in the slot and will be used as a safety in certain packages. Many may not want to hear this, but DeJean didn't exactly cover top receivers last year.

The safest choice for the Eagles would be to roll with either the veteran Jackson or have DeJean do it. Bennett should be a legitimate candidate for the job and will hopefully receive first-team reps at CB2. Ringo's chances are slowly dying each week at training camp.

This is a position battle worth monitoring as with Roseman being friendly with general managers on trades lately. Don't be surprised if a move for another cornerback could be in the works if no one steps up for Philly.
