Just days after it was explained why Celtic would not benefit from FIFA’s solidarity contribution on Ben Doak’s £25m move from Liverpool to Bournemouth, fresh reports have revealed that the club are in line for a cash boost after all.
SunSport claims that a sell-on clause was quietly inserted into the deal when Doak swapped Celtic Park for Anfield in 2022. That clause now stands to deliver what they have described as a “significant” fee, with the payout understood to be at least seven figures — meaning £1m or more.
It had initially been thought Celtic’s only return for developing Doak was the £600k training compensation fee received at the time of his switch to Liverpool. As explained earlier this week, solidarity payments don’t apply to domestic transfers within England, so there was no expectation of Parkhead receiving a cut of Liverpool’s sale to Bournemouth.
However, the unexpected sell-on clause has changed that picture entirely. Celtic will now rake in a sizeable sum from the winger’s Premier League move.
Doak made fleeting first-team appearances for Celtic under Ange Postecoglou before leaving at just 16 years old. Now 19, he looks set to restart his career on the south coast after a loan spell in the Championship last season.
