Ex-NFL GM: Giants’ Jaxson Dart is ‘Day 1’ starter, and a former QB pretty much agrees

Jaxson Dart continues to add fans in the NFL community.

ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum, a former NFL general manager, said Monday that Dart is ready for the spotlight.

“To me, Jaxson Dart won the weekend. He is a Day 1 starter,” Tannenbaum, a former NFL GM, said on ESPN. “He was accurate, he was poised, he was confident. I love the way he played (on Saturday)...

“If I’m (coach) Brian Daboll, he has earned the job. I’d put him in and just live with the growing pains.”

Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel echoed that sentiment on Sunday.

“Jaxson Dart [is] clearly very comfortable in Brian Daboll’s up tempo offense,” Daniel wrote on Threads. I don’t know how you can leave him on the bench for long at all.”

He followed up later in the day: “For the people that are saying he needs to sit for the whole year…the absolute best way to develop is to play real football games," Daniel, who played in the NFL from 2009-22, wrote on Threads.

In Saturday’s 31-12 win over the rival Jets, Dart was 14-of-16passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns (including one rushing) and a 123.2 rating. It was his second straight strong preseason showing.

Dart, the rookie out of Ole Miss, is now QB2 for the Giants after leapfrogging Jameis Winston on the depth chart.

“He’s going to be a great player, just based off his confidence, based off his reads,” receiver Jalin Hyatt told NJ Advance Media. “He’s not scared of throwing the ball. He’s greedy — and that’s what you want from a quarterback. Greedy and aggressive.

“He looks downfield. That’s why I think he’s going to go a long way. Just having him be as confident as he is as a rookie, it’s very impressive. When his shot does come, he’ll take advantage. He’s going to be a great quarterback. When his chance comes, it’s going to be fun to watch. He’s going to be a great player for us for sure.”
