Birmingham City eye shock swoop for Leeds United striker target who ‘tore up the Championship’

The latest transfer news as Birmingham City and Leeds United are linked with Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Birmingham City and Leeds United have been linked with a shock move for Al-Hilal striker and former Newcastle United star Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Blues, expected to complete more transfer business before the window slams shut on September 1, are understood to be looking at versatile attackers. Mitrovic, who once shattered the Championship goalscoring record with 43 goals in 44 appearances with Fulham during the 2021/22 season, has been tipped as a surprise target.

Currently playing in the Saudi Pro League after a stunning £46 million move from Fulham in 2023, Mitrovic has continued his remarkable form with 68 goals and 15 assists in 79 outings across all competitions. Al-Hilal’s recent acquisition of Darwin Nunez from Liverpool has put Mitrovic’s future in doubt, however.

Mitrovic tipped for Birmingham or Leeds transfer

Despite his success in Saudi Arabia, Mitrovic is now reportedly being offered £21.5 million to leave Al-Hilal early. With Nunez now the priority, Mitrovic is unlikely to play as regularly as he has throughout the past two seasons. The 100-time Serbia international still has 10 months left on his contract.

If Mitrovic were to exit Al-Hilal this summer, a return to England could be on the cards and both Birmingham and Leeds have been tipped as surprise destinations. Live on talkSPORT on Sunday evening, journalist Alex Crook made a surprising revelation, suggesting Blues could well be in the picture.

Crook said: “The other rumour I heard yesterday, and this is interesting for fans in the Championship and fans of Birmingham City, Aleksandar Mitrovic is potentially coming back from Saudi Arabia to St Andrew’s. Mitrovic tore it up the last time he was in the Championship.”

Meanwhile, The Chronicle reported in its print edition on August 6 (page 44) that Leeds had been offered the chance to sign Mitrovic. There’s been plenty of speculation linking the former Newcastle striker with a move to Elland Road since, though nothing concrete has emerged just yet. The Whites have also just signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Are Birmingham actually in the race to sign Mitrovic?

Blues have certainly flexed their financial muscle this summer by completing nine signings so far, but it’s unlikely Mitrovic will be the tenth. As the striker is currently on a reported £400,000 per week, it would be nearly impossible to lure him to St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park, unless he were to take an almighty pay cut.

Chris Davies has said publicly that he wants four strikers and that quota has already been met following the signings of Marvin Ducksch from Werder Bremen and Kyogo Furuhashi from Stade Rennais. Record signing Jay Stansfield remains a talismanic figure and Lyndon Dykes has proved handy as an impact substitute.
