Newcastle United are 'exploring the market' for a new striker, while they keep working on Brentford centre-forward Yoane Wissa, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed, writing in his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter.
Adding a new centre-forward has become a major priority for the Magpies this summer, particularly with speculation surrounding a potential exit for Swedish striker Alexander Isak. GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs has previously reported that Liverpool have made an effort to sign Isak this summer, but Newcastle have so far rejected their bids to secure his signature.
Against Aston Villa at the weekend in Newcastle's opening Premier League game of the season, Anthony Gordon was deployed as a makeshift striker by Eddie Howe. With Isak currently not involved, that leaves just William Osula as a natural striker option, but Howe clearly doesn't trust him to be a regular starter as it stands.
Newcastle Exploring the Market for Striker
Yoane Wissa celebrating after scoring for Brentford
Writing in his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter, Romano has confirmed that Newcastle are exploring the market for a new striker for the remainder of the summer transfer window. The Magpies are in contact with agents to understand prices, while they also keep working on a deal to sign Brentford striker Wissa...
"Exploring the market, contacting agents to understand prices. Soon it will be clear. For sure, they keep working on Wissa, also."
It's unclear how Newcastle will line up if they do sign a striker if Isak does stay at the club, but it's clear they at least need a backup considering Gordon was deployed in an unfamiliar centre-forward role at the weekend. Their lack of firepower in the final third was evident against Aston Villa, struggling to break them down and convert chances, despite Unai Emery's side going down to 10 men, with Ezri Konsa being sent off.
Wissa does appear to be keen on the move, with the Brentford striker not in their squad against Nottingham Forest at the weekend due to ongoing transfer speculation. It looks set to be a busy end to the summer transfer window for the Magpies, with exits and incomings in the striker position likely to be at the forefront of the media.
Up next for Newcastle, interestingly, is a game against Liverpool next Monday. It's unclear whether Isak will feature for either club, with speculation regarding his future still up in the air.
