West Ham United produced a disappointing display against Sunderland at the weekend, where they were defeated 3-0, and former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer has shared the 'very worrying' situation he spotted from the Hammers.
It's been a slow start to the summer transfer window for the Hammers, and that showed during their opening game of the Premier League season. Only El Hadji Malick Diouf started the game of their new additions, and they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat against newly promoted Sunderland.
It was undoubtedly a huge wake-up call. Not just for the players and Graham Potter, but the owners too, as it's a clear sign that they need to bring in further reinforcements before the end of the summer transfer window. The threat of relegation might not have been on the minds of West Ham supporters, but their start to the campaign could be a major worry.
Alan Shearer Names Big West Ham 'Worry' From Sunderland Clash
Graham Potter
Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, former Newcastle United striker Shearer has shared the big worry he saw from West Ham during their defeat against Sunderland. Shearer claimed that it was 'very worrying' to see the Hammers hold after conceding the opening goal, with the atmosphere getting to them...
"The worrying thing for me was how they folded when they conceded one goal. I mean, the atmosphere and everything seemed to get to them and worry them, and it was a complete lack of energy and all of those things that you think, come on then lads, what we got. So that would be very worrying from a West Ham point of view, definitely."
It's clearly an issue that Shearer feels Potter needs to fix ASAP, and it's no surprise considering they were defeated so easily by a side competing in the Championship last season. It's a worrying sign for times ahead, but there's still two weeks remaining for them to fix it in the transfer market.
The Hammers didn't concede until the 61st minute, but it didn't take long for the Black Cats to fire in a second one. In the dying seconds of the game, Sunderland added a third through Wilson Isidor, with plenty of the West Ham supporters already making their way to the exits.
