Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez exited Sunday’s 7-3 win over the Seattle Mariners in the Little League Classic in Williamsport with a right thumb injury.
Alvarez will return to New York and undergo an MRI on Monday’s day off.
“Right now, we don’t know what we’re dealing with, but we just gotta wait now,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said after the game, via SNY.
Alvarez missed time in 2024 due to a torn ligament in his left thumb. He was out for the beginning of this season with a broken bone in his left hand.
“Concerning, I’m not gonna lie,” Mendoza said.
The injury came in the seventh inning Sunday night after Alvarez rocked his third hit of the game. He slid into second head-first to beat the throw, and appeared to jam his thumb into the bag.
Alvarez was attended by trainers but stayed in to run the bases. He was replaced defensively by Luis Torrens at the top of the next inning.
Alvarez spent time this year with Triple-A but has seemed to find his stride since he’s returned to the big leagues in late-July, hitting .323 with 13 RBI since his promotion.
