Newcastle United are expected to push ahead with their pursuit of Yoane Wissa this week, with an expectation the club will return with a new offer for the Brentford forward.

After missing out on deals for Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike already this summer, Newcastle have made Wissa their new first-choice target.

There is growing hope on Tyneside that a deal can be agreed before the Magpies return to action a week today when hosting Liverpool at St James' Park, however that is not the feeling in London, with talkSPORT reporting Brentford sources suggesting it is now more likely Wissa will stay at the club.

That feeling comes despite the fact the player was absent from Brentford's opening game of the season.

The Bees hold an option of another year on a player who is out of contract next summer. With his contract running down and given he is 28-year-sold, Newcastle are very unlikely to go beyond £40m for Wissa and certainly not near the £60m suggested in some quarters that Brentford want to let the player leave.

Bees boss Keith Andrews has worked closely with Wissa to help develop his game and has made his feelings very clear on the situation. Speaking to talkSPORT, Andrews claimed that Wissa 'owes' him, he said; "I have got a good relationship with Wiss.

"I worked really hard with him last year to try and find goals. Seven of his 19 goals last year came from set pieces. He owes me really, so he shouldn't be going anywhere, to be blunt!"
