Chelsea kicked off their 2025/26 Premier League campaign in frustrating fashion, grinding out a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace.

Up front, the Blues looked toothless, with Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Estevao, Pedro Neto, and Liam Delap unable to create a single moment of real danger.

At the back, there was at least a silver lining as young Josh Acheampong stepped up brilliantly in place of the injured Levi Colwill, who is set to miss the bulk of the season.

Still, Acheampong’s youthful heroics aren’t enough to carry a full Premier League campaign. Chelsea are clearly on the hunt for someone with bite, steel, and experience to anchor their defence — and it seems they may have zeroed in on the perfect candidate.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Chelsea have tabled a £43 million bid for Inter Milan stalwart Alessandro Bastoni.

The 25-year-old has been described as a “monster” by Barcelona star and Ballon d’Or favourite Lamine Yamal, and for good reason. Over the past few seasons, Bastoni has established himself as one of the deadliest, most composed central defenders in world football — a player capable of turning a shaky backline into a fortress.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca appears to have made him a top priority, hoping Bastoni can slot straight into Colwill’s shoes and provide the defensive muscle the Blues desperately need.

However, Bastoni himself has voiced his intention to remain at Inter, determined to finally lift the Champions League after heartbreak in two finals over the past three years. That leaves Chelsea in a high-stakes waiting game: do they push harder for a deal or look elsewhere?

One thing is certain — Chelsea need a commanding presence at the heart of defence, and Bastoni perfectly fits the bill, ready to transform their backline if they can convince him to make the move.
