The Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 1 matchup in São Paulo, Brazil, is just around the corner, kicking off on Friday, Sept. 5, against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Kansas City will close out Week 3 of the preseason at home on Friday night against the Chicago Bears, and on Monday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided a significant update regarding star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce.
Reid confirmed that the starters, including Mahomes and Kelce, will suit up and take the field in the preseason finale—something they didn’t do last weekend against the Seattle Seahawks.
“They’ll start it off, for sure, and then we’ll see how it goes from there,” Reid said. “I wanted to give the best look we could to these guys that are trying to make the team. We’ve got some guys who are right on the border of making it. Give them a shot. And I wanted to see the quarterback work with the [No.] 1 offensive line.”

Patrick Mahomes played just three snaps in the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals and mentioned after the game that he’d like to see a bit more action. That looks likely to happen on Friday against the Bears.
It’s expected that Mahomes and Kelce will at least play the first full series, with the possibility of one or two additional series depending on how the opening quarter unfolds.

Regardless, getting both stars on the field before the regular season is a major boost for Kansas City. Reid has consistently favored this approach with his key players, and it has often led to strong early-season performances in the past.
