PITTSBURGH --Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Ben Skowronek is dealing with a toe injury, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said on Monday. Skowronek surprisingly missed the team’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday.
It is unknown just how severe the injury to Skowronek is, but the wide receiver was not in a walking boot at the game or in the locker room on Monday. Those signal positive signs in the direction of Skowronek recovering faster.
Without him in the fold, players such as Brandon Johnson will earn more snaps and reps on special teams to showcase just what they can do.
Skowronek was a key special teamer and versatile player for the Steelers on offense last season. He was signed to the practice squad after being released by the Houston Texans.
Skowronek missed time with shoulder and hip injuries, but became an integral part of their special teams units as a gunner. He played as a wing, wide receiver, fullback, and even an H-back at times in the offense. That allowed Skowronek’s role to take shape.
He was selected by the Rams out of Notre Dame, where he was teammates with former Steelers wide receiver Miles Boykin. Skowronek won the Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021, and has just over 500 receiving yards in his NFL career.
