Arsenal could still sign winger after Rodrygo boost

Arsenal could still make a move for a left-winger late in the summer transfer window, with Manchester City fading in the pursuit of Real Madrid’s Rodrygo.

Speaking to NBC Sports on Sunday, David Ornstein suggested that if Arsenal are to make a late move in the summer market, it looks like it will be for a left-winger.

“I think Arsenal would like to upgrade on the left side of their attack if they can,” Ornstein said. “I think they’ve identified that as an area [of interest] if there are departures, which there’s no sign of at the moment.

“They’ve been heavily linked with Rodrygo at Real Madrid, I don’t know of any activity on that one even though they’ve looked into it in the past.”

Less than 24 hours after Ornstein’s comments, Arsenal’s potential pursuit of Rodrygo has received a boost with reports that Manchester City may be pulling out of the race.

City had shown a strong interest in signing Rodrygo if Savio left for Tottenham Hotspur, but Guillem Balague reports they’ve now decided to keep the Spurs target.

Balague write that City’s decision kills any possibility of Rodrygo joining Pep Guardiola’s side, adding that Real Madrid never received an offer anyway.

Reports over the last month or so have strongly suggested that both Real Madrid and head coach Xabi Alonso are open to selling Rodrygo, but the issue has been that nobody has bid for him yet.

The likes of PSG, Liverpool, Spurs, City, and Arsenal have all been linked, but PSG have denied interest, Liverpool are focusing on Alexander Isak, Rodrygo has rejected Spurs, and now City have pulled out.

That only leaves Arsenal, which could make a deal possible in the final fortnight of the window. But as Ornstein points out, sales have to happen first.
