Leeds United player ratings as Anton Stach and Ethan Ampadu impress in Everton win

Leeds United marked their return to the Premier League with a well-deserved 1-0 win over Everton under the lights at Elland Road.

United played well in the first half and dominated the ball, bullying the Everton defence in the box from set-pieces - alas without a goal.

It further emphasises Daniel Farke's plea for more attackers to come through the door, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin not ready to play.

It was the other free striker signing - Lukas Nmecha - that was the hero of the night as he powered home a penalty after the ball struck the arm of James Tarkowski.

Leeds won't care - that's a huge three points and ensures Leeds get on the board from the off. Here is how the players rated.

LUCAS PERRI

Held onto crosses and through-balls calmly and punched clear when needed. Needs to work on his distribution, though, and was slow to get to a pass that should have been given as an Everton corner. 7

JAYDEN BOGLE

A typical Bogle performance with solid defensive work and attacking intentions. Leeds looked more defensively sound with him there. Did play a few loose balls in the second half. 7

JOE RODON

Positioning and marking was top notch, enjoying his battle with Beto. The fact he wasn't overly tested much pays tribute to his reading of the game and United's structure. 7

PASCAL STRUIJK

Really solid showing, winning the ball back and being an aerial threat. Easily could have got on the scoresheet. Some good balls in tight scenarios, too. 8

GABRIEL GUDMUNDSSON

Sensible but positive too. Got forward and kept the ball well. Learnt from leaving gaps in pre-season. In a word - sturdy. 8

ETHAN AMPADU

Put in a crunching tackle or two while making the deep midfield his own, on his own. Has taken on the mantle of the long-throw specialist, it seems. Snuffed out the counters expertly. Somehow played on after a crunching tackle. 8

ANTON STACH

Was often seen winning the ball back and then sparking forward. His work usually led to a chance or a gain or territory. Also did his work going the other way too. 8

AO TANAKA

Moved the ball laterally neatly and read the play well, with and without the ball. Needs to watch his tackle when tracking back. Played forward better in the second half and was involved in the attack whenever he could be. 8

DANIEL JAMES

Improved from pre-season but still not quite at his peak level yet. Looks much better when supported by Bogle, the pair linking up frequently. 7

JOEL PIROE

Got into the right places and was always looking for goal. Looked a step quicker when closing down. Was marked out easier in the second half, though. 7

WILFRIED GNONTO

Was a handful to contain on the left. His agility had right-back Jake O'Brien on the back foot. United's biggest attacking threat of the game, with a few close efforts. 8

SUBS

SEAN LONGSTAFF

On for his debut late on. Too late for a rating. N/A.

ILIA GRUEV (on 66' for Ampadu)

Kept his position well. Was the late blockade in front of the midfield that was required. 6

BRENDEN AARONSON (on 66' for Gnonto)

Held the ball well, winning a free-kick - but later got turned too easy by Dewsbury-Hall that ended with Peri having to save a shot. 6

JACK HARRISON (on 77' for James)

Hard working and grafting spell. Keep on with that and he'll win the fans back quickly. 7

LUKAS NMECHA (on 77' for Piroe)

An initial poor stint turned into a memorable one with a coolly taken penalty. The best way to mark a debut. Confidence grew afterwards. 7
