This Brian Robinson Jr. trade would sicken Commanders fans (but it makes sense)

The Washington Commanders are reportedly shopping veteran running back Brian Robinson Jr. Many fans seem to be okay with the idea of trading the running back, entering a contract year, but maybe it's not the right move.

Whether or not you agree that it's the right or wrong move, one way or the other, there is one scenario that might have Commanders fans feeling some type of way. Let's just say, hypothetically, the Dallas Cowboys entered the chat.

Dallas' running back room is mostly laughable aside from rookie fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue, whom many believe will wind up taking over starting duties sooner or later. But the Cowboys also have veterans Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, who are almost guaranteed to be past a serviceable point in their careers.

The Cowboys would love to have a player like Robinson, at least over Sanders or Williams.

Commanders-Cowboys trade involving Brian Robinson Jr. might be the only scenario Washington should avoid

If the organization is, indeed, intent on moving on from Robinson, so be it. There is no real going back from the swirling rumors if they have any substance. That all but seals his fate, in a way.

Should the Cowboys show any interest, though, the Commanders should avoid a deal unless Dallas offers some obscene package like a Day 2 pick. Fans don't want to see Robinson suiting up for the Star.

Anywhere but Dallas, please.

Now, on the other hand, Robinson could end up staying put if there are no offers that Washington likes. That could also play into both sides' hands. Again, he's in a contract year. That's motivation enough to perform, especially in an era where running backs are starting to gain more traction in free agency deals.

Robinson could take this news as yet another motivating factor. If he winds up sticking around and starting for one more year, don't be surprised if he has his best season yet. The Commanders might want to keep him, too, because there is no guarantee behind him. Sure, there are some talented guys, but Austin Ekeler is getting older. Jeremy McNichols is a fine no. 3 back, but he isn't more than that.

And, rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt has impressed, but injury history is something to be wary of.

Robinson is probably this team's best option, which is why trading him doesn't make complete sense. However, if they do it, let's just hope it isn't to Dallas.
