Everton started off their Premier League season with a 1-0 defeat to Leeds United, but it wasn’t short of controversy.
After a defeat on Monday night against Leeds, David Moyes will know the need for signings will heighten.
The game had some bright moments for the Toffees, but it’s clear they were lacking the cutting edge in the second half.
An Everton debut for Jack Grealish was exciting to see, but the Scotsman might now see fit to hand him his first start against Brighton next Sunday.
Grealish impressed Premier League fans, but it’s not the start that Moyes wanted. However, the Blues boss will have serious questions over Chris Kavanagh, and for more than one reason.

Everton could complain about Iliman Ndiaye foul before James Tarkowski penalty against Leeds United
The main talking point was of course, the penalty being harshly given against James Tarkowski.
It was claimed that the defender handballed it, but many have suggested his arm was in a natural position as Lukas Nmecha’s goal separated the game.

However, it wasn’t the actual decision given by Kavanagh that should have taken the headlines, as a Sky Sports reporter spotted something else.
Watching the encounter, journalist Vinny O’Connor said: “Tarkowski had his arms down by his side. I’m not sure about the award of that penalty, but the majority of Elland Road are deliriously happy.
“Everton will not only bemoan the award of the spot kick but also the fact (Iliman) Ndiaye didn’t get a free kick at the other end as he tried to wriggle his way into the box.”
This may have been what truly frustrated Moyes after the match, as the Toffees manager will no doubt feel hard done by.
Everton must improve in the final third ahead of Brighton game
Of course, it’s disappointing to lose on a decision like that, as Kavanagh was controversially appointed after previously going against Everton.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t the brightest of performances from the Toffees, and Moyes will know improvement is needed.

With Brighton next, the Scotsman might have to make some decisions in his forward line, as after Moyes was previously disappointed with Beto, he wouldn’t have been too pleased with his display once more.
The main talking point will be Kavanagh’s poor decisions, but Everton have to improve moving forward.
