Leeds United returned to the Premier League in the perfect manner on Monday night with a 1-0 win over Everton at Elland Road, though the victory was clouded in controversy.
Having watched Sunderland beat West Ham on Saturday, Leeds will have been hoping to get three points on the board in what was deemed a winnable game. The Whites dominated the first 45, unable to score.
A handful of half-chances through the likes of Willy Gnonto, Anton Stach and Ao Tanaka came to nothing. In the second half, Everton looked much more promising and started to win more territory in Leeds’ half.
Carlos Alcaraz tested Lucas Perri, but Leeds dealt with everything Everton had to offer. Then, a massive decision. A penalty given when James Tarkowski blocked a drive from Stach, from the edge of the area.

Jamie Carragher picks Leeds United player as best on the pitch
Tarkowski’s arm was down by his side, but was moving towards the ball when his arm made contact. VAR agreed with the on-field decision and substitute Lukas Nmecha tucked the ball in the bottom corner.
Leeds were the better side even if the winner came fortuitously, and at half-time, Jamie Carragher was full of praise for skipper Ethan Ampadu on Sky Sports. He said that the Wales star was the best on the pitch.
“Leeds have completely dominated. This man [Ethan Ampadu] is pulling the strings, and Everton have not been able to lay a glove on them. Ampadu has ran the game. He’s been the best player on the pitch.”

Ethan Ampadu substituted after challenge from Everton man
It is a rare sight seeing Ampadu subbed off. But, on 78 minutes, Ampadu was taken off 20 minutes after being on the receiving end of a hefty tackle from Everton’s midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, with studs up.

The former Aston Villa midfielder was late and there was genuine concern for Ampadu at one point, as the skipper stayed on the deck, writhing in pain. Leeds fans are well aware that is a rarity for Ampadu.
More will be said after the game about Ampadu’s fitness, but the fact he could play for another 20 minutes after the tackle, is a good sign. Hopefully, it is just a knock and he can shake off the injury.
