The Everton player rating following defeat to newly promoted Leeds United.
Everton kick-start their Premier League campaign with a late defeat at Elland Road. A late 84th minute strike from Leeds's new signing Lukas Nmecha condemn the Blues to their first defeat of the season.
David Moyes's side struggled to deal with the home side in the first-half being swarmed in their own half but not troubling Jordan Pickford in net.
Everton also struggled in retaining the ball leaving the back four mounting under pressure from Leeds. The Toffees ended the first half with zero shots and not carving out a clear opportunity.
The second-half and it was the visitors who started to get a foothold in the game despite not causing any problems for Daniel Farke's side.
The game was settled by a contentious penalty decision as James Tarkowski was penalised for handball, which was then dispatched by Nmecha to break the deadlock to hand Leeds the three points.
Everton player rating
Jordan Pickford - 6
The 31-year-old dealt with everything thrown at him. The England international wasn't really tested and didn't put a foot wrong. At times his passes were inaccurate but made a strong save late on to deny Leeds a second.
Jake O'Brien- 6
Dealt with tricky winger Wilfred Gnonto well and stood up to the task. The Irish international went closet for **Everton**to breaking the deadlock as he headed over from close range from a Kieron Dewsbury-Hall corner.
James Tarkowski- 6
A typical steady performance from the Everton captain kept Joel Piroe quiet and was composed when playing out from the back.
A harsh decision for the penalty as he put his body out to block the shot but almost levelled for the Blues as his header just looped over the bar.
Michael Keane - 6
Similar to Tarkowski, the 32-year-old was settled and dealt with everything thrown at them with Keane blocking and clearing crosses which came across goal.
James Garner - 6
Played in an unorthodox position at left- back Garner took a while to accustom to the role but once settled he shown a battling display as he coped with tricky winger Dan James.
Tim Iroegbunam- 4.5
The midfielder struggled in the first-half to get on the ball and bring control to an Everton midfield however made some good ball recovery tackles and did try and drive the Toffees up the pitch.
Iroegbunam was booked in the second-half for a late challenge on Ethan Ampadu and was replaced by Jack Grealish.
Idrissa Gueye - 5.5
The Senegalse blazed a shot well over the bar in the second-half and broke up play on numerous occasions but struggled to get on the ball and build Everton out of dealing with the pressure that was thrown at them.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall- 5.5
Making his Premier League debut for the blues the 25-year-old didn't really have a say in the first half as Everton barely had possession.
However in the second-half the new addition got on the ball more and looked tidy. The 25-year-old swung in a corner which O'Brien should of done better and slide in Carlos Alcaraz who's effort was pushed out for a corner.
Carlos Alcaraz - 4
The experiment is over for Everton as once again Alcaraz struggled out wide but is being occupied there as the blues haven't got a natural right winger.
The Argentine came closet for **Everton**to open the scoring where his low effort was pushed out by Lucas Perri for a corner.
Iliman Ndiaye - 5
Like most offensive player for **Everton**Ndiaye struggled to get involved in the game but did show glimpses in the second-half as David Moyes's men got some control on the game.
Beto -4.5
Beto was isolated all evening and didn't look like troubling Leeds's back four in what was a thankless task for the striker.
However, his hold up player has to be stronger to give the Blues an focal point.
Substitute:
Jack Grealish -5
The new signing looked composed on the ball and won Everton a lot of fouls and played out wide on the left.
Theirno Barry - N/A
Barry came on and replaced Carlos Alcaraz just after Leeds had scored but similar to Beto it was a thankless task with ball getting played long as Everton were searching for the leveller.
