Tottenham transfer setback as PL rivals perform late U-turn

Pep Guardiola the stumbling block as Tottenham Hotspur struggle to land Manchester City star Savinho

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a frustrating blow in their pursuit of Savinho, after Manchester City performed a late U-turn and pulled the plug on a potential deal.

Spurs had been pushing to sign the Brazilian winger, who impressed last season with 11 Premier League goal involvements and was eager for more consistent football. North London looked like the perfect opportunity, with Thomas Frank keen to add Savinho to his attacking ranks as James Maddison recovers from long-term injury.

But just as the move started to gain traction, Pep Guardiola stepped in. According to multiple reports, including TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey, Guardiola made it clear to City’s board that he did not want to lose Savinho. While the hierarchy were said to be open to a sale for the right price, around £65 million, they ultimately backed their manager’s decision.

Bailey explained:

“Savinho has been informed that the deal is a non-starter. I believe it was possible, but with just a few weeks left, it is not ideal. Pep Guardiola did not want to lose him, and that was key.”

Pep Guardiola continues to be a huge obstacle in Tottenham’s pursuit of Savinho.

What now for Tottenham Hotspur?

For Spurs, this is undoubtedly a setback. Daniel Levy and the recruitment team had identified Savinho as a top target alongside Eberechi Eze, with the plan to bring in both rather than choosing one over the other. The Brazilian’s pace, flair, and creativity would have offered something different to Frank’s side, especially with the departures of Son Heung-min and Maddison’s absence.

However, the refusal from City does not end Spurs’ pursuit of attacking reinforcements. Levy has already shown his intent this summer with deals for Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, and Joao Palhinha, and the club remain confident that at least one more major signing will be made before the window closes.

Daniel Levy can hopefully see the deal for through.

Tottenham still in a strong position

Despite the setback, Spurs fans can remain optimistic. The club’s pursuit of Eze continues, and the financial flexibility is there to make another marquee signing. Frank has been vocal about his need for creativity, and Tottenham are determined not to let this window pass without delivering the players to match those ambitions.

Savinho may not be heading to N17, but Spurs remain very much in the market for top-class attacking talent. With two weeks left before deadline day, Daniel Levy still has the opportunity to ensure Tottenham finish the summer strongly.
