After spending most of the offseason with the Patriots, New England traded the pass rusher to the Atlanta Falcons before the season. Hoping to bring a much-needed veteran presence to a young defensive line, Judon appeared in all 17 games while making 15 starts. Unfortunately, the 32-year-old had a rough stint, finishing the season with 5.5 sacks, 41 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, nine quarterback hits, and a 43.0 PFF grade, the 117th-best mark out of 119 eligible players. Despite entering the season as NFC South favorites, the Falcons went 8-9 and missed the playoffs.

Matthew Judon originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Selected by the Baltimore Ravens, the Gran Valley State product began his career in a situational role. Appearing in 14 games without making a start, the rookie finished his inaugural season with four sacks, 27 tackles, four tackles-f0r-loss, and 10 quarterback hits.

Following his impressive rookie season, Judon earned an increased role in 2018. Appearing in all 16 games while making 12 starts, the edge defender recorded eight sacks, 61 tackles, 19 quarterback hits, and 17 tackles-for-loss. Following another strong season in 2018, Matthew Judon made the Pro Bowl in the final year of his rookie contract. Baltimore used the franchise tag to keep him around in 2020, and he responded with another Pro Bowl campaign.

Now a free agent for the first time, Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots spent big on the former fifth-round pick. Judon proved worthy of this investment, recording 12.5 sacks in 2021 and 15.5 in 2022. He remained effective early in 2023 but suffered a season-ending injury after just four games.

Since signing his rookie contract, Matthew Judon has recorded 72 sacks, 410 tackles, 94 tackles-for-loss, and 174 quarterback hits in 131 games.
