Tre Johnson may be the Wizards only hope to escape the constant cycle of mediocrity

There's no denying that over the last few years, the Washington Wizards have been statistically one of the worst teams in the NBA.

Washington has spent years trying to find a prospect they could build around since the departures of John Wall and Bradley Beal.

Arguably the best duo in Wizards history, but failed to bring the DMV any hardware to show for it.

Since then, Washington has only gotten deeper in the hole in the Eastern Conference. With a constant cycle of mediocrity keeping the Wizards from becoming an attractive destination in both free agency, the trade market and seemingly the NBA Draft in regards to generational talents like Cooper Flagg, who was reportedly uninterested in joining the Wizards.

Despite that, things may finally be turning around for the Wizards thanks to general manager Will Dawkins strong offseason landing several intriguing prospects.

One prospect in specific that could change the entire future landscape of the Wizards rebuild is [Tre Johnson.](https://wizofawes.com/tre-johnson-absolutely-steal-show-washington-wizards-season)

Johnson was selected with the No. 6 overall pick by the Wizards and many may look back on the 2025 NBA Draft and deem Washington as the most fortunate team in the lottery.

Considering the dynamic guard was under consideration to be selected with the No. 3 overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers according to multiple reports, the Wizards avoided a nightmare scenario after falling out the top five as a whole.

The Texas product has the talent to be the franchise cornerstone the Wizards have desperately been searching for and with his game-changing scoring ability, Washington could be a team on the rise sooner rather than later.

Johnson's scoring will already be a skillset that could immediately ascend the Wizards in the Eastern Conference, but if he's able to improve his playmaking ability too he has every tool at his disposal to be one of the best guards in the NBA in a few years.

That alone, says a lot about a Wizards franchise who has desperately been seeking a prospect that could help them turn things around.

Looking at the landscape of the current roster, between all young prospects on the team with the likes of Bilal Coulibaly, [Alex Sarr](https://wizofawes.com/washington-wizards-massive-alex-sarr-problem-hands), Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George and even AJ Johnson sticking out, Tre Johnson has the most upside for the Wizards to bank on.

If Johnson pans out, the Wizards rise in the league could be one to monitor moving forward.
