Bayern Munich are pushing to bring a Chelsea striker to Germany on loan.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich are in talks over a transfer that would see forward Christopher Nkunku leave Stamford Bridge for the Bundesliga giants.

The 27-year-old joined the Blues from RB Leipzig in 2023 for £52 million but found himself on the fringes under Enzo Maresca last season. Nkunku’s best appearances came in the Conference League as it became clear he was not the type of striker Maresca wanted in his system.

Chelsea have splurged on Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich Town this summer, which has seen Nkunku placed on the transfer list. The Frenchman is one of the priorities for the club to move out this summer as they look to bring funds into the club.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich in transfer negotiations

Nkunku was not included in the matchday squad to face Crystal Palace on Sunday but did see minutes for Chelsea at the Club World Cup, scoring against Benfica. The player bagged 15 goals across 48 appearances last term.

Having previously been named the Bundesliga Player of the Season and won Ligue 1 three times with Paris Saint-Germain, Nkunku has not been short of interest. Manchester United were credited with transfer interest earlier in the summer but it is now Bayern Munich who appear to be frontrunners.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg reports that Chelsea are locked in negotiations with Bayern Munich after personal terms between the striker and the German giants had been agreed. However, the sticking point of the deal is whether the move is a loan or permanent transfer.

Taking to social media platform X, Plettenberg wrote: “FC Bayern and Christopher #Nkunku have reached a full verbal agreement. Personal terms are 100% agreed, as Christo wants to join Bayern. However, Chelsea still want a permanent deal, as previously reported, while Bayern are considering a loan. There is no agreement on the structure of the deal yet after new negotiations over the weekend. Further talks between the clubs are expected. Max Eberl pushing hard but it’s very difficult.”

Chelsea look to fund Man Utd swoop

The Athletic had recently claimed that Chelsea had lowered their asking price for Nkunku by £22 million to now be £43.3 million. The Mirror reports that the Blues need that cash injection in order to fund a swoop for Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

The 21-year-old wants out of Old Trafford and has been excluded from the squad by Ruben Amorim. Inter Milan and RB Leipzig are also named by the Mirror as clubs who could still consider a move for Nkunku, should talks with Bayern Munich fail.
