The Green Bay Packers signed former Auburn defensive back Jaylin Simpson on Monday, the NFL team announced.
Less than two weeks ago, Simpson was on the New York Jets’ injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
On Aug. 2, the Jets waived Simpson with an injury designation. When Simpson went unclaimed, he reverted to New York’s injured reserve on Aug. 3, and the Jets waived him again on Aug. 6 with an injury settlement that cleared him off the roster.
A fifth-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2024, Simpson was on the team’s practice squad when the Jets signed him on Dec. 11. He spent the remainder of the season on New York’s active roster, but he did not play in a game.
Simpson started his Auburn career as a cornerback, but he played safety in 2023. Indianapolis listed Simpson as a cornerback on its roster, but New York showed him as a safety.
Simpson is slated for safety work with the Packers, even though Green Bay waived cornerback Garrett Hollis to create a roster spot for him.
Packers safety Omar Brown left Saturday’s preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts with a lung injury, and Green Bay safeties Xavier McKinney and Zayne Anderson already were dealing with injuries.
The Packers have one preseason game remaining at 3 p.m. CDT Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, before the regular-season schedule kicks off on Sept. 7 against the Detroit Lions.
