Gary Neville mentioned Ibrox in the aftermath of Leeds United’s Premier League victory over Everton on Monday.

Neville said he had “special memories” of Ibrox in April, praising the Rangers fans for the atmosphere they can create.

Russell Martin will hope his side will benefit from exactly that when Rangers play Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs on Tuesday, 19 August.

Nicolas Raskin could feature against the Belgian side, according to the former Southampton boss, despite mounting speculation surrounding his future.

Leeds won on their Premier League return on 18 August, with Lukas Nmecha converting a penalty in the 84th minute after referee Chris Kavanagh controversially pointed to the spot.

James Tarkowski’s block was judged as handball after the defender had looked to lean down to make the block, with the ball striking the outside of his arm.

However, the decision has drawn criticism, with the Everton man punished despite keeping his arm as tucked in as possible.

The penalty came as a result of huge pressure exerted by the home side, who benefited from a rambunctious atmosphere at Elland Road.

Neville praised the atmosphere following the final whistle and compared it to the noise created at other grounds in Britain.

Speaking live on Sky Sports on 18 August, he said: “I’d put Elland Road definitely alongside Anfield, Ibrox and Celtic Park, some of the great hostile grounds that were just ferocious when you went there and you knew you had to work really hard to win.”

Atmosphere will prove key for Rangers vs Club Brugge

Martin will hope Ibrox takes Neville’s comments as a challenge ahead of Rangers’ meeting with Club Brugge on Tuesday.

The Belgian Pro League runners-up have won three of their four league games to start the season and are expected to provide the Gers with their biggest test yet.

Rangers drew 2-2 in a friendly with Club Brugge in July.

They will benefit from the incoming Mikey Moore, who made his debut against Alloa Athletic.

Ibrox will need to be in full voice to create an intimidating atmosphere for their visitors, with Rangers experiencing a difficult start to their own season.

Martin’s side have drawn both of their Scottish Premiership fixtures so far, but did enjoy victory over Alloa Athletic on Saturday, 16 August.

Qualifying for the Champions League proper, with the riches that come with it, would go a long way to forgetting what has been a gloomy start to the season.
