Everton kicked off their new season with a defeat against Leeds United.
The Toffees have high hopes for the 2025/26 campaign because of David Moyes and their new stadium, but things didn’t go to plan on Monday night.
Leeds were the better side for large parts of the game at Elland Road, but Everton held on and the game looked destined to finish 0-0.
However, a controversial penalty that Moyes completely disagreed with late in the game gave Leeds the win, but that wasn’t the only thing that upset the Everton boss.
David Moyes was left ‘disgusted’ after what Everton did vs Leeds in the 42nd minute
Leeds started the game very well against Everton.
You could see that the hosts were really up for their first game back in the Premier League, and Elland Road was rocking as well.
Daniel Farke got many things right for Leeds on Monday night, and they probably deserved to win the game in the end, albeit because of a controversial penalty.
However, long before that happened, in the 42nd minute of the game, Moyes was not a happy man.
That’s because Everton had just begun to gain some control in the game and had possession of the ball in the final third.
However, instead of trying to penetrate Leeds’ backline, they passed the ball back, and it eventually ended up at Jordan Pickford’s feet.
Michael Bridges was on commentary duty alongside Martin Tyler on Premier League Productions, and the former Leeds man spotted Moyes’ reaction to the above.
He said live on air: “I’ve just had a look down there at David Moyes, he’s got his hands on his head because he has just seen his team have possession on the edge of Leeds United’s penalty area and they’ve gone all the way back to Pickford.
“And I just had a look at (Michael) Keane having an argument with the midfielders, saying: ‘What are you doing?’
“David Moyes was disgusted with the way his team have just literally had come from possession and have gone all the way back.”

Everton’s next five fixtures in the Premier League after Leeds defeat
Playing against a newly-promoted side on the opening day of the new season is never easy, and Everton found that out the hard way against Leeds.
The Toffees just didn’t get going on Monday night, and although the penalty was harsh, they will admit that they didn’t deserve much from the game.
Moyes will want his side to bounce back, and there are some interesting fixtures coming up in the Premier League.
Date Fixture
August 24, 2025 Everton vs Brighton
August 30, 2025 Wolves vs Everton
September 13, 2025 Everton vs Aston Villa
September 20, 2025 Liverpool vs Everton
September 29, 2025 Everton vs West Ham
After losing the first game, Everton will want to open their account for the season against Brighton, who they beat 1-0 in their last meeting.
The fixture against Wolves will also be viewed as winnable by Moyes, but the games after – against Aston Villa and Liverpool – will be really difficult.
It will be interesting to see how Everton will fare in those games after the heartbreak on the opening day.
