Newcastle United reluctantly sold Elliot Anderson last year to comply with PSR restrictions.
Elliot Anderson had social media in a storm at the weekend as calls ramped up for his England inclusion.
Newcastle United are given a hurtful reminder of how damaging PSR restrictions can be every time the Whitley Bay native pulls on a Nottingham Forest shirt. Toon chiefs were forced to sell Anderson just over a year ago for a cut-price fee.
With the threat of a Premier League points deduction looming, the Magpies offloaded Anderson and Yankuba Minteh - their most prized youth prospects. Anderson went on to enjoy a stellar debut season at Forest and starred for England under-21s as they retained the Euros earlier this summer.
Elliot Anderson backed for England call-up
A sublime assist for Chris Wood - another former Newcastle star - as the Tricky Trees beat Brentford amplified noises about a possible senior call-up. Many believe Anderson is destined to partner Declan Rice at next year’s World Cup.
Elliot Anderson is an absolute must for the next England squad

Elliot Anderson is an outrageous footballer. How did we get him so cheaply? And how did he come without much hype or excitement at the time? I have no doubts in my mind he’s going to the World Cup next summer. That through ball to Wood for his second was sublime.#nffc

Adam Wharton is deserved praised by fans, but not many hail the superb talent of Elliot Anderson from Forest.

England the ultimate goal
Speaking to The Telegraph last week, Anderson outlined his desire to put himself “in the best possible position” for the England squad. He said: “I feel full of confidence coming off the back end of the Euros, and I want to carry it on. My focus there was just on performing and putting myself in the best position possible for the seniors.
“That’s all I’ve done and that’s what I’ll continue to do. I’m in a really good place now. I’ve got to carry on my performances at club level with Forest and see where it takes me. My biggest aim this season is to add some numbers (goals and assists) to my performances, which will probably take me to the next level.”

‘Leaving Newcastle a shock’ - Elliot Anderson
Anderson again reflected on how leaving Newcastle came as a surprise but gave him a chance to shine elsewhere. He added: “It (leaving Newcastle) definitely was (a shock). I didn’t really see it coming, but it’s the new rules in football these days.
“I got a phone call while I was away on holiday, telling me I was possibly going to leave. A few days later I was flying to Nottingham. I’ve come to Forest and it’s really benefitted me as a player, but maybe I didn’t see it like that when I left Newcastle. Everything happens for a reason and it’s been a great move for me. I’m really enjoying my football.”
