Wrexham close on £8m deal for Manchester City ace, Sheffield United were keen

Wrexham are close to signing Manchester City defender Callum Doyle in a deal worth £8m, according to The Athletic.

Wrexham transfers have been key to their success over the past three years, making a fantastic surge from the National League to the Championship with back-to-back-to-back promotions.

Phil Parkinson’s side may have tasted consecutive defeats in their first two Championship games, but their business this summer means there are high hopes for the Red Dragons.

They’ve made statement signings for the likes of Nathan Broadhead, Lewis O’Brien and Liberato Cacace, but they’re not done there.

According to The Athletic, Wrexham are now closing in on a deal for Manchester City centre-back Callum Doyle.

The 21-year-old defender has not been short of options this summer as the Cityzens line up a permanent exit after a series of loans. The Athletic names Sheffield United and Rangers as the sides set to be beaten to his signature, but all of Norwich City, Leicester City and Coventry City have been said keen in separate reports too.

Doyle will set Wrexham back a significant £8m overall, with location said to be a decisive factor for the talented youngster, who was born and still lives in Manchester.

Another statement deal for Wrexham

Wrexham have already spent big and made their presence known in the transfer market, and by signing Doyle, they would be doing so again.

The left-sided defender isn’t just an eye-catching prospect from the Manchester City youth ranks, he’s someone who has now proven himself as a more than capable defender at Championship level across several loans. Doyle’s primary role is as a left-sided centre-back, but he has thrived at left-back before too.

Across spells with Sunderland, Coventry City, Leicester City and Norwich City, Doyle has amassed a great level of senior experience and is more than familiar with fighting it out at the top end of the division. That pedigree will be of huge value for Wrexham AFC.

On a permanent basis, they’re signing someone who can develop further into an even more valuable asset too.

Pressure will pile on Phil Parkinson if results don’t come after impressive Wrexham transfers

Wrexham will have known a big step up awaited them on the rise from League One to the Championship this season, especially given just how quick their rise has been.

However, what is abundantly clear is that the Red Dragons aren’t backing Parkinson with money nor signings just to consolidate.

If Doyle does join the likes of Cacace, O’Brien, Broadhead, Conor Coady, Josh Windass and Kieffer Moore in moving to the Racecourse, Parkinson will have a clutch of players capable of competing at the very top of the division. More depth and strength is required across the board, yes, but the quality of those standout signings is more than good enough for Championship level.

If a poor start was to persist, it might not take long for Parkinson to start to feel the pressure, despite all he has done for the club.
