Leeds United’s stunning plans to build one of the Premier League’s biggest stadiums

Leeds United have unveiled stunning plans to build one of the Premier League’s biggest stadiums. The Whites returned to the top flight in style after reaching 100 points and winning the Championship under Daniel Farke last season, and they already look up to speed in their new surroundings after claiming a 1-0 win over Everton on Monday night.

After a first half in which they dominated, pinning their visitors back and restricting them to zero shots, Leeds showed defensive resilience in the second period, digging in to keep the Toffees at bay. A James Tarkowski handball eventually led to Lukas Nmecha converting from the penalty spot for the game’s only goal. Watch his debut goal below:

The result meant that, for just the third time in Premier League history, more than one newly promoted side had won their opening match of the season, with Sunderland also managing victory over West Ham. But Leeds are making a statement off the pitch too. Earlier this year, they revealed ambitious plans to give their iconic Elland Road a new lick of paint.

Leeds United's Elland Road Renovation Plans

Rather than leaving Elland Road - the club’s home since its formation in 1919 - Leeds plan to enhance their historic ground, already renowned for having one of the best atmospheres in Britain. Under proposals first outlined in September 2024, the club revealed a major capacity increase, rising from just under 38,000 seats to 53,000.

This expansion would make the 106-year-old stadium the eighth-largest football ground in England, edging just ahead of Everton’s new home at Bramley-Moore Dock. The plans show the capacity boost would come through expanding the West Stand by almost 10,000 seats and the North Stand by just under 5,000. Watch the initial plan explanation video below:

According to The Sun, there are also proposals for Elland Road to host national and international football fixtures, along with non-football events such as concerts. The planning application submitted to Leeds City Council stated that up to eight non-football events could be staged each year.

The redevelopment would also bring upgrades to both general admission areas and hospitality facilities. If approved - with the club hopeful of a response within 13 weeks - renovation work is scheduled to begin in 2026.
