Centre-back search continues as Wrexham 'close in' on £8m rated former Coventry City favourite

Coventry City old boy Callum Doyle could be heading to Championship new-comers Wrexham. The Hollywood-funded Welsh side have splashed the cash this summer, having already brought in the likes of Nathan Broadhead, Lewis O’Brien, Conor Coady and Kieffer Moore.

And now, according to The Athletic, the Red Dragons – who are owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – are “closing in on the signing of Manchester City defender Callum Doyle in a deal worth up to £8m.”

Sheffield United and Rangers are also reported to be keen on the defender, who had an impressive loan spell at the CBS Arena in 2022/23 when he helped the Sky Blues get to the play-off final.

He went on to have further eye-catching loans at Leicester City and Norwich, but now wants to cut his apron strings with his parent club to get a permanent move.

Frank Lampard is currently looking for a replacement for Luis Binks, who was sold to Brondby last month, and left-sided centre-back Doyle would appear to be the perfect fit. Certainly, many Coventry fans rate the defender and would love to see him back at the club.

City have had two bids, the highest being £7m, turned down for Hull centre-half Charlie Hughes, and Lampard has made no secret of the fact that he’s in the market for central defenders, telling CoventryLive at the weekend: “We need centre halves and we need centre halves to come in, for sure. And at the moment we have Joel (Latibeaudiere), who’s not fit, and Bidders (Jake Bidwell) there, who can and has done the job.

“Of course we know we’ve got Bobby (Thomas) and Kitch (Liam Kitching). We know what we need; I certainly know what we need and that’s fine.”

Thomas, meanwhile, has been the subject of interest from Sheffield United who, it is claimed, are ready to shell out £8m for his services. Brentford and his former club Burnley have also been linked with interest in the 24-year-old.
