Alejandro Garnacho dealt major blow during Chelsea transfer talks as Man Utd stance clear

Alejandro Garnacho has been dealt a blow ahead of a potential transfer to Chelsea. The Manchester United winger has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer as Enzo Maresca seeks to strengthen his frontline before the summer transfer window closes on 1 September.

Despite starting in all previous knockout round ties, Garnacho was benched for the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur. Then, on the last day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Ruben Amorim dropped him from the matchday squad.

If it wasn't already clear, Amorim left him behind when the Red Devils flew off to the United States for pre-season. Speaking to reporters in Atlanta, the United boss confirmed that the Argentina international was free to leave.

So, with that being said, the Express has rounded up everything you need to know about Garnacho and a potential transfer to Stamford Bridge.

The Athletic reports that Garnacho remains a top target for Chelsea, as Maresca looks to bring in competition for Jamie Gittens. The report suggests that the United winger is set on a move to Stamford Bridge, ruling out all other options. It's reported that the Blues are 'active in talks' with the Red Devils as they seek to find a solution.

According to our colleagues at football.london, Chelsea are still working on a deal to sign Garnacho from United, but they're reluctant to pay more than £30m. The 21-year-old winger, who has attracted plenty of interest this summer, has made it clear that he wishes to join the Blues.

The Red Devils value Garnacho at £50m, but Chelsea are hoping to secure a bargain given his situation at Old Trafford. The Argentinian fell out of favour with Amorim at the end of last term, and he played no role in United's opening game of the new Premier League season.

Lionel Scaloni hasn't named Garnacho in the preliminary Argentina squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers in September. The United winger hasn't featured for his country since he came off the bench in a 2-1 defeat to Paraguay in November 2024.

Earlier this month, Amorim described Garnacho as a 'talented boy', who wants 'a different thing with a different leadership'. The United boss said: "I think Garnacho, you can understand and you can see, he's talented, that he's a really talented boy.

"And sometimes things don't work out. You cannot explain specifically what it is. But I have the feeling, I think it's clear that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership. I can understand that.

"So I think it's not a problem. Sometimes you adapt to one guy; you have the connection. Other times, you want a new challenge. So, we try to make everything okay to all parts. To the club, to the coach and to the [other] players. So, it's a natural thing in football."
