Cup final referee is handed Albion's game at Everton

Stuart Attwell will referee his first domestic match since being involved in FA Cup final controversy when [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/) visit Everton.

The Seagulls go to the Hill Dickinson Stadium in round two of the Premier League season.

Attwell is an experienced head to take charge of what could be a lively atmosphere as Everton play the long-awaited first game at their new home.

They will do so against an angry backdrop of perceived injustice amid the blue half of Merseyside after a penalty verdict which probably cost them a point at Leeds.

Midlands-based Attwell did not have a game in the opening weekend.

His last domestic fixture remains the cup final which saw Crystal Palace defeat Manchester City in May.

The match brought controversy as Palace keeper Dean Henderson escaped a red card for a handball outside his penalty area.

He concluded the season with two international friendlies and started this campaign in Slovakia with a Europa League tie between Spartak Trnava and Uni Craiovia.

Attwell refereed 132 games across all competitions last season, showing yellow 137 times.

His three dismissals included the harsh second yellow shown to Carlos Baleba when Albion won 2-1 at Bournemouth.

Attwell played a large part from the VAR role towards the end of last season when Albion were awarded a pair of penalties in their 2-2 draw at home to Leicester.

The video assistant this time will be James Bell.

EFL referee Bell progressed through the Enhanced VAR Training Programme, earning a number of appointments in the Premier League.

Michael Oliver has the middle for the West Ham v Chelsea showdown which kicks off the weekend.

The full officiating team for Everton v Albion is as follows.

Referee: Stuart Attwell. Assistants: Con Hatzidakis, Nick Hopton. Fourth official: Tom Nield. VAR: James Bell. Assistant VAR: Lee Betts.
