Manchester United have been handed fresh optimism in their pursuit of funds for Gianluigi Donnarumma, with Andre Onana potentially heading back to Inter Milan.

The Italian giants are reportedly keen on bringing the goalkeeper back to the San Siro, just two years after offloading him to United. Onana's time at United has been a rollercoaster since he helped Inter reach the Champions League final in 2023.

He endured several high-profile blunders last season, sparking speculation that the Red Devils might seek an improvement between the sticks.

The shot-stopper has been missing from pre-season fixtures whilst regaining full fitness, but manager Ruben Amorim clarified that injury wasn't the reason for Onana's absence against Arsenal on Sunday.

"No (he is not injured), he's recovered but the other guys did so well during pre-season, so I need to balance that," Amorim explained after selecting Altay Bayindir and placing Tom Heaton on the bench.

United have been connected with several goalkeepers as potential replacements. Most speculation centres around Gianluigi Donnarumma, whom two former players believe would be ideal for the role, whilst there's also been renewed speculation about Aston Villa's Emi Martinez.

Belgian keeper Senne Lammens is another target, with both United and Inter pursuing his signature. However, according to The Sun, Inter are shifting their focus to Onana amid suggestions he would embrace a return to the club, reports the Mirror.

Should Inter make a move for Onana, it could pave the way for United to secure Donnarumma despite competition from rivals Manchester City.

The Italian keeper claimed the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain last season but is reportedly available for just £26million following the French side's summer acquisition of Lucas Chevalier.

Such a transfer would delight former United legend Wayne Rooney. "Donnarumma, I think he's 26, he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world, it would be crazy if Man United don't go for him," the ex-striker declared on his podcast.

"I don't think he's a risk. I saw a stat the other day - the errors leading direct to goals. His was zero."
