Werder Bremen’s head of first team football has suggested that Isaac Schmidt has shown interest in joining the German club this summer.
The Bundesliga outfit are hoping for a loan deal for the Leeds United defender, who is worried about his game time opportunities this season. After underwhelming in the final two pre-season games of the summer, Schmidt was left out of the matchday squad entirely against Everton.
After arriving last August, the 25-year-old failed to start a Championship game, with his full debut only coming in January’s FA Cup third round tie with Harrogate Town. Across the league campaign, he played just 71 minutes.
However, last season did mark a significant personal milestone, with the right-back making his senior Switzerland debut. Schmidt has been told by national team boss Murat Yakin that he will make the squad for next year's World Cup should he earn regular game time this campaign.
That looks an unlikely prospect at Leeds, with the player aware of his place in the pecking order, and so a move away seems the most likely route forward.
Werder Bremen have held their loan interest for a number of weeks now, but Leeds will not allow him to leave until a replacement is secured.
Reports in Germany suggest Bremen are getting impatient with just two weeks to go until deadline day. Leeds have meanwhile entered into talks with Leicester City defender James Justin.

While a transfer is still possible his injury over the weekend had muddied the waters. United have other full-back options on their transfer shortlist should discussions not progress. As for Schmidt, Bremen football chief Peter Niemeyer claims the defender has shown interest in a move.
As per BILD, he said: “It is well known that we are interested in Isaac and that he can very well imagine a move to us.” Schmidt’s contract at Leeds lasts until 2028.
