Bid rejected as Villa step up pursuit with new offer touted

Aston Villa have reportedly had a bid rejected by Toulouse for defender Jaydee Canvot, but a fresh approach is touted.

The 19-year-old has emerged as a top young talent having come through the youth ranks at the French side, and he’s since gone on to make 21 appearances for the first-team.

It appears as though the potential and talent that he’s displayed thus far has been enough to convince the Villa recruitment team that he would be a top signing, but it may take an improved offer to prise him away this summer.

According to Fabrice Hawkins, Toulouse have rejected our proposal for Canvot, but he adds that a new offer is expected from Villa, but it remains to be seen if we’re prepared to meet their valuation of around €20m.

Canvot is a natural centre-half but can operate as a defensive midfielder too, while he’s been capped from U16s to U19s level by France to suggest that he has a bright future ahead of him for both club and country.

Villa have an area of the squad to address still as we’re short of competition and depth in defence, particularly in the form of a right-sided centre-half behind Ezri Konsa, and so Canvot could be an important short-term and long-term solution.

That said, we’ve seen a recent trend from Villa of acquiring promising young talent and looking to sell them on for a profit, so it remains to be seen what the strategy would be with the Frenchman moving forward.

At a time when we’re facing restrictions financially, every signing comes with a level of scrutiny and attention, and so it’s hoped that if we do commit a significant outlay on Canvot, that he proves to be a sensible acquisition that either benefits us on the pitch in a big way, and/or he’s able to bring in a good profit if we opt to sell him on in the future.

These will all be considerations from Villa as we continue to work on deals in the latter stages of the summer transfer window, and time will tell if Canvot arrives to bolster our defensive options for this season and beyond.
